I am grateful to have met visiting artist @valerie I am grateful to have met visiting artist @valeriejhegarty today @nbmaa56 and participate in "The Altered States of America" adult workshop. I was interested to learn about using collage as a tool for addressing a larger political/social issue of today.

It comes easy for me to make art with tiny houses and about wishing I lived in a Wonderland world. Though using art to better understand and express my feelings around issues such as systemic racism and white supremacy sometimes feels too big to start to tackle.

Valerie shared the importance of using writing as a helpful way to get to the idea. We narrowed down our ideas and also shared them with eachother - what we care about, what problems we see, what are possible solutions? These processes helped me feel less intimidated.

For many years I always thought an onion was a great representation of unlearning from harmful systems. I had many months going through periods of grief - it was like with each layer of unveiling and seeing how things actually are, I would cry....and still do at times.

Today was a wonderful reminder that there is never one path to something and how sharing in a group adds another means of understanding.
